Buying and storing antiques properly requires knowledge. If you don't take the time to do it right, you can turn a priceless item into a worthless one quickly.

If you have ever thought about collecting antiques, you know it takes more than just buying your favorite pieces. You have to know what the items are worth, and you also have to know how to store and care for your collection. Even if you intend on selling the item at some point, you must care for it properly or you will find that the value of the item will decline.

Getting an Appraisal

One of the most important steps you should take when storing and caring for your prized antique collection is having the items appraised. This is especially true for pieces that you know are worth a lot of money or for pieces that you are not real certain about. If you want to have the piece insured (and this is recommended for valuable collectibles in case of some sort of damage or theft), then appraisal is the first step. Have you ever watched the show Antique Roadshow? They appraise all sorts of antiques and many owners are delighted to find out they are holding a real treasure. You never know how much grandpa's old toy truck is worth. Of course, you know that many antiques have more of a sentimental value than monetary value.

Determine if Restoration is Necessary

Another important note on having your antiques appraised. If you do not know the value of a piece then having it appraised is essential before you undertake any restoration or cleaning. What you see as a dirty antique in bad need of a fresh coat of paint may actually be quite desirable to collectors. Check it out first, and then proceed with restoration if necessary. In addition, if you are unsure of how to go about restoration, then it is always recommended to hire a professional.

Storing & Caring for Antiques Properly

Now you will have to think about storing your collection or displaying it. If you are thinking about displaying, you need to think about the best way to preserve your collection. For example, if you collect artwork, old photos or fabric pieces (such as rugs or quilts), then you need to think about reducing the amount of sunlight that hits your piece. This can fad and ruin your antique. If you have fragile pieces that you want to display, then you will certainly want to consider enclosing it to keep the dust and moisture off.

When you store your collectibles, there are many ways you can keep the pieces safe. First of all, you will need to carefully wrap fragile pieces in safe packing wrap and keep it stored where it cannot get broken. Also, think about keeping stored items in a climate controlled environment, whether a storage facility or a room in your home. Never store expensive items in your garage, attic, basement or the storage shed in your backyard.

It is very important that you take proper care of your items. Take the time to learn how to care for all of your priceless antiques.
