Collecting and selling antiques is a great hobby for some. If you are thinking about starting your own hobby in antiquing, take a look at some of these suggestions.

The idea of collecting and selling antiques is appealing to many people. You can concentrate on the antiques that you love the most and become an expert in the field. In addition, when you sell your antiques, you can make a little or a lot of extra cash, depending on how much you sell. However, it does take time and planning in order to find success in the antique business.

If you like the idea of collecting and selling antiques, then there are a few things you should know before you get started. You cannot simply start collecting and selling in one day and expect to find success. There are some people that make a whole business of this, while others simply do it for their hobby.

Know Your Market and Products

One of the first things you will want to do when it comes to selling and buying antiques is you will want to take the time to get to know the market and your product. Many people start collecting a certain type of antique because it is appealing to them. For example, someone that loves teapots or colorful Fiestaware will collect to keep and display. However, they may start selling their wares because their collection has become too big. This is more of a hobby and you can expect to get what you put into it.

Once you have decided what you want to collect and sell, you need to take the time to learn a lot about the product. Get some books and do your research. You need to understand every detail of the product because many buyers will look to you for this information. Once you understand everything about the product, you can gain the confidence to start collecting and selling.

Know How to Make Money

If you expect to make a profit, then you need to know how the market works. Antiques are very finicky. What sells like hotcakes one day, may falter the next. It all has to do with trends and supply and demand. You also need to understand the type of person who will buy your antiques. The same person that buys antique silverware will probably not be the same person that will buy antique quilts or tools. It is just the way it works.

Keep Track of Your Inventory

You will also want to start getting inventory. This can be the hard part because you will have to take the time to scour flea markets, thrift stores and garage sales. You need to know what is a good deal and what is not. If you plan on keeping a piece to add to your collection, then you can spend a little more. However, it you want to sell it, then remember that you want to make a profit. That is why you need to take the time to find out how much the collectibles are worth before you buy and sell.

Once you get your collection, you can begin selling. You can run a store, but selling on the Internet is very easy. Check out listings on Craigslist or eBay. The one thing you have to worry about with eBay is the cost of shipping and getting the item to the buyer in once piece.
