Best Gift Basket Ideas for Vintage Collectors

Items for Foraging for Collectible Jewelry and Antique Clothing

Nov 19, 2009 Lorraine Syratt

What better gift for a vintage clothing or vintage jewelry collector than a gift basket full of the things that may assist them on the treasure hunts.

Vintage clothing and jewelry collectors will all be happy to have these gift baskets waiting for them under the tree. Fill them with all the basic tools, no die-hard vintage collector can be without.

Gift Basket Ideas for the Jewelry Collector

The perfect gift basket for a jewelry collector could be an opened vintage jewelry box. Vintage jewelry boxes come in an assortment of materials from wood and papier mache to plastic, wicker and porcelain. The container gift basket just needs to be a size that will fit the items placed into it.

  • The jeweler's loupe is a necessity for jewelry collectors. It's a small magnifying eyeglass for the collector to check for marks to help decipher whether or not the piece is gold or even what gemstones are in the settings.
  • A price guide to antique and vintage jewelry will assist in ensuring the collector is paying a fair price for the item.
  • Jewelry polishers used for silver and gold pieces and a soft cloth to shine up the stones.
  • A spray bottle of Formula 409. Collectors of bakelite jewelry will love this as it helps determine whether it's real bakelite or not. Dampen a cloth with the formula, rub it on the inside or underside of the piece, and if the cloth comes up brown, it's bakelite. An instructional tag could be included in the gift basket.
  • Add a few pieces of inexpensive jewelry. Vintage Christmas Brooches would be ideal and they're easily found for under $10 at thrift shops and online.

Gift Basket Ideas for the Vintage Clothing Collector

A beautiful gift basket for a vintage clothing collector could actually be an upside down hat, an opened vintage handbag or a small opened leather suitcase.

  • Include a piece of vintage clothing like an inexpensive scarf, silky nightdress, Edwardian camisole or petticoat. Even a collection of lacy white handkerchiefs make a nice addition. A pretty vintage Christmas apron would fit the them beautifully.
  • Add a measuring tape, which is something the collector can keep in her purse when she's out foraging.
  • Another useful tool for vintage clothing collectors is a price guide book on vintage clothing, such as Vintage Clothing, 1880-1980 or Antique Trader™ Clothing Price Guide to name just two that are easily found online.
  • Add a couple of vintage sewing patterns in the collector's size. Ideally the pattern envelopes should be in good shape, and the patterns inside should be uncut and factory folded. Expect to pay anywhere from 25 cents in thrift shops to over $10 in vintage clothing stores.
  • A small sewing kit for easy fix-ups by hand, can be found at dollar stores.

The Finished Gift Basket

The gift basket, whether hand bag or jewelry box should be left open and the items should be placed inside with the the taller items at the back of the container. Use tissue to keep the items in place.

Lay a large sheet of clear acetate on a table and place the filled gift basket in the middle of the sheet. Bring up the corners and hold together with a twist tie or elastic band.

Finish the gift basket with a holiday greenery and big wired bows. A nice added gesture could be an attached envelope with tickets to the next vintage clothing show, or a gift certificate to her favorite vintage jewelry or vintage clothing shop.

Don't feel uncomfortable about giving old things as a Christmas present. The recipient will love the gift, as well as the time and thought put into it.
