On Monday, February 25th, thieves made off with a trailer packed with $40,000 worth of American Art Pottery that was being prepared for sale at the American Art Pottery Association Convention auction in the Philadelphia area in April. Included in the lot of stolen pottery were reproductions that the association uses to educate collectors about forgeries and fakes. A reward is being offered.
Columbus police are looking for a 1990s model white Ford F150 pickup truck and its driver who hitched up the loaded American Hauler Cargo Trailer, and made off with 175 pieces of American Art Pottery late Monday night. Belhorn was able to provide police with surveillance photos of the vehicle. The auction house is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to recovery of the pottery or the arrest of those responsible for the theft. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hilliard Ohio Police at (614) 876-7321.
Art Pottery Buyers: Procede with Caution
Belhorn Auction Services President Greg Belhorn said that the stolen pottery was fully insured, and that consignors would be reimbursed for all financial loss. Not recoverable, however, are the funds that would have been raised by the auction including Belhorn Auction’s commission and buyers premiums which are both donated to the American Art Pottery Association. Bellhorn added that he believed the thieves were after tools and lawnmowers, and has hopes that the pottery can be recovered. Hopefully, the forgeries will be recovered before they are sold as authentic on the open market. Collectors of American Art Pottery should exercise caution in their purchases for the next few months.
Below is a partial list of the stolen pottery. For photos and more information, check the Belhorn website.
